Our Story

Springfield Prep Charter School was founded in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 2015 by educator Bill Spirer with a simple but ambitious belief: every child deserves access to an excellent education that prepares them for success in college, career, and life. We opened our doors with just kindergarten and first grade and added a grade each year.  As our founding students grew, so did our school!  Along the way, we moved from our first home, co-located with Veritas Prep on Pine Street, to the Heritage School Site on Coverse St. before settling into our permanent campus on Roosevelt Avenue in 2021. In 2023, our founding 1st graders became the first class to graduate in the beautiful gym they had to wait patiently to experience

Today, Springfield Prep serves 486 students in grades K–8 and continues to build on a decade of strong academic results and deep partnership with families.  As Springfield Prep entered its second decade in 2026, leadership transitioned from founder Bill Spirer to current Executive Director Meghan Wagner, who has been part of the school's leadership team since the school’s early years and helped guide many of the milestones that shaped Springfield Prep's first decade.

Our academic results consistently rank among the strongest in Springfield, with students achieving some of the highest MCAS performance in both English Language Arts and Mathematics among public schools in the city. We credit those results to our exceptional teachers and staff, a culture of continuous improvement, and an unwavering belief that all students can achieve at high levels. Our classrooms combine rigorous instruction with meaningful support. Through co-taught classrooms and an inclusive approach to special education, students with diverse learning needs receive individualized support while remaining fully engaged in grade-level learning.

And we know preparing students for success doesn't end with 8th-grade graduation. Beginning in middle school, students and families work alongside our High School Advisor to explore schools that align with each student's goals and aspirations. Through individualized advising, application support, and family guidance, students are equipped to make informed decisions about the next step in their educational journey. That investment is reflected in the choices our graduates make. Nearly two-thirds of Springfield Prep graduates enroll in college preparatory high schools, with another quarter attending high-performing district and early college programs.

As our alumni community has grown, so has our commitment to supporting them.  Through our Student Pathways Program, Springfield Prep continues to partner with alumni and families throughout high school by providing advising, counseling, college planning, financial aid support, and resources as students prepare for whatever comes next.  Whether a graduate plans to attend college, enter the workforce, pursue technical training, or explore another path, our commitment remains the same: helping Springfield Prep graduates build a future filled with opportunity.

Our Innovative Model

At Springfield Prep, we implement a number of innovative strategies utilized by the highest-performing urban schools in the country to close the achievement and opportunity gap and give our scholars a rich, well-rounded education.

COLLEGE MISSION

We infuse our school culture with a college theme so that scholars see college as a realistic part of their future. Classrooms are named after colleges, students participate in an annual college visit every year, starting in kindergarten, and a teacher, family member or guest presents on their alma mater at our weekly Community Meeting.

TWO TEACHERS IN EVERY CLASSROOM

Our team-teaching model allows us to teach small groups with a low teacher-student ratio and ensures that we can meet the needs of diverse learners in the general education classroom. This also allows for constant professional collaboration, which is good for students and teachers.

TEACHER SUPPORT AND COLLABORATIVE PLANNING

We believe that great teaching changes lives, so we invest heavily in our teachers. This includes observation and coaching, professional development, and collaborative planning time for all teachers, every week.

DATA-DRIVEN INSTRUCTION

Knowing our kids’ needs allows us to help them grow. We constantly analyze student academic work and data to ensure that our instruction is getting results and to determine how we can better meet the needs of individual students.

GROWTH MINDSET AND POSITIVE CHARACTER

We teach our scholars about having a “growth mindset”, because this helps them see that their ability can be developed through dedication and hard work. We also teach “soft” skills like shaking hands and sitting up straight, which are critical for success in high school, college, and the professional world.

A WELL-ROUNDED EDUCATION FOR ALL

All scholars take dance, music, art, and physical education classes, and have daily recess. Our curriculum and school experience are infused with performances, field trips, and guest speakers so students have opportunities to develop interests, hobbies and passions in and out of the classroom.

Our Students

We are a Springfield public school that serves primarily Springfield students. Our student demographic mirrors that of the Springfield Public Schools, our sending district.  The school is free, public, and open to all students who submit a simple one-page application. Students are selected by random lottery.

Family Satisfaction

Every year, Springfield Prep conducts a Family Satisfaction Survey to gather input from our families. The 2023 Family Satisfaction Survey, completed by 77% of families, shows that families feel a strong connection to the school and are very satisfied with the education their children are receiving.
